Title: Attention: Newly registering members

Paula - March 17, 2008 05:47 PM (GMT)
Due to a recent influx of spam accounts being registered, I've had to ban certain email domains altogether - if you're attempting to register a legitimate account and your email address is being rejected (or if your account gets mixed in with the spammers and deleted), please drop me an email (use the link in my profile) and I can help you out.

Also, please note that upon registering, your account will appear as "validating" - meaning you can only post/reply in certain areas until you're approved. But no worries, it shouldn't take too long - just until Elle or I have the chance to sign in and give you the green light.

Thanks, and apologies in advance for any inconvenience!

we know the feeling... it's only the most safe thing to keep the board from being spammed

Paula - March 18, 2008 05:35 PM (GMT)
Yeah, since switching to Danneel.net we've gotten a bunch of spam traffic - we've had to switch it so every new account is approved by us, which is a pain, but otherwise we get a bunch of ads for Viagra and other vile things I won't type here. Grr.

wow...i didn't realise the new URL (or..the extra url) gave yu that much trouble :(

hope everything gets resolved soon

Yeah, I'm not sure what the deal is. The easier URL was supposed to be more convenient! But I guess because it's an actual domain now and not buried inside InvisionFree it's suddenly a target for spam. Boo.

It's not THAT much trouble, it's just a bit annoying to have to approve/deny every new membership, and try to guess which ones are/aren't spam accounts, since some of them seem like they could go either way. Hopefully I haven't accidentally banned any Danneel fans. lol

Haha thats just what i was thinking. So unsure of some accounts but..if we denied you then it's really not on purpose!

twinzz-evelien - March 22, 2008 01:38 PM (GMT)
well..they can always re-register with a more..unspammy username and emailaddress...

Paula - March 22, 2008 04:31 PM (GMT)
Well that's the thing - some of them truly could go either way. The spammers now have started using Gmail accounts and it's hard to say if their name might actually be something meaningful or just total gibberish. Though I've learned that if you Google their intended username, a lot of times you'll find out they've registered for craploads of other boards the same day, in which case they get deleted. lol

aren't we lucky we registered when the board wasn't spammed yet..with our gmail account
